The measuring device consists of a source holder and a detector, which are placed on opposite sides of the silo, conveyor, or pipe to be measured.

As the equipment is not in direct contact with the substance to be measured, the radiometric measurement is reliable and secure. The equipment does not wear out, and it can usually be installed and serviced while the process is ongoing.

Safe transportation, installation, and use are enabled by modern cast-steel source holders and sensitive detectors. Transmitters have HART and bus protocols.

Typical measuring applications include level and quantity measurements for solids, level measurement from a pressurised process, and density measurements through process pipes.
